Door Handle Replacement

It's worth it to replace door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look, or if they are difficult to use. Installing a new door handle is easy if you have patience.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates that hide the screws to give them an attractive look. However, you'll have to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't already have them.

Remove the handle that was previously used

Door handles are not only an important aesthetic addition to your home but they're also vital for safety since they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle could begin to lose its grip or feel a bit loose. It could also appear aged and worn. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace the door handle.

One of the first indications that your door handle needs replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is an issue because it means that you can no longer lock or unlock your door, which could pose the risk of security for you and your family.

It's also an excellent idea to replace your door handle in the event that it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, particularly for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They may get trapped. Luckily, it's quite simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the handle that was broken.

Most modern door handles are a standard size and therefore should fit any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will fit, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will help you to buy the right door handle.

It is easiest to remove the old door handle by removing it from the door. Usually it is a matter of using a screwdriver. Some door handles have an enclosure plate that hides the mounting screws. It is necessary to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. After you have removed the old handle, make a note of the way in which the spindle is connected. This will assist you in aligning the new handle.

Alternatively, you can remove the door handle by removing it from the latch mechanism. Remove the Strike Plate

The first step is to unscrew the screw that's holding the latch plate in place. The screws are often quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. If you can, it might be beneficial to have a second person help with this process.

After the screws are removed, the latch plate will slide out of the door with ease. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now, you can proceed to preparing the new door strike plate to be installed. With the screws made of wood that came with your new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Don't over tighten your screws as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, close and open the door to see if it latches and closes properly. If not you'll need to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or forward or back, until the door closes and latches properly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, you may need to increase the size of the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too narrow, the incorrect size of the latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the situation you can use a metal file instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Removing the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks in an opening in the door frame so that the door remains closed. If your door wiggles when you close it, replacing the latch might be all you need to fix it.

The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to locate however, you can use a screwdriver to make a small hole in the trim plate and pry the latch off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to take off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.

If the latch isn't easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the double glazing window handle mechanism. Place the item in the recessed latch slot and gently move it around until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. It is possible to repeat this process several times before you can take the latch off.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the door's front and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Check that the latch size of the new handle is in line with the measurement.

You'll require a brand new cylinder for your lock if you're replacing the handle and latch, or your old one is damaged. If you're not changing the locks however, a new latch will fit in your existing recess and will work with your current keys. Be sure to select a latch with rectangular cover plates that match the handles you have.

Remove the cover plate

The first step to replace an internal door handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which covers the screws and mechanism inside. Look for an release tab on the plate, and use a flathead screwdriver to remove it from the knob. It may have an opening on one edge or be held by a pin.

When the cover plate is off take the screw that holds the inside handle in place, and then set it aside. If yours does not, you'll need to drill a hole in the door for the new handle. The process for doing this is similar to the procedure for opening a door with locks, but you'll have to be extra careful not to harm the door or frame.

After drilling the holes after which you'll have to put in new door knob screws. Make sure you purchase the same size as the previous ones, so you won't have the handle that is too tight or loose. Installing a new latch and strike rod is also required. They aren't included in all door handle sets.
