WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost in specific statistics. Each upgrade increases the item level upgrade level by +3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like the eth Titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrades upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be used to create Enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item, however they'll always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and accessories. They can be bought by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased it can be used on any weapon or tool with a button, which will display an item's preview at the next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the item slot, and the current item level. For instance weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Many locations offer item upgraders in addition to the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases according to the number of items that are being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items available at the start of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades are acquired via a variety of means, which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. After an upgrade has been completed to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This applies regardless of whether the items come from another set of gear.

Crests

The crests can then be exchanged with an item upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and pathways.

Using these new currencies isn't that difficult however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade items process. For instance, once an item is at the highest level of upgrade item for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is intended to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests have one purpose, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the best equipment available, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning on making. This is especially true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character that will be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
