How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and requires replacement audi key cost uk. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues with your vehicle. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points.
